Chapter 31 – Intrusion

The pop of the dying fire and creak of the old house settled in the back of her mind as Samantha frantically calculated the probability of the latest discovery before evening stole the light. What was once spoken of in jest and laughed at in medical circles stared from the pages in mocking triumph.

They’d done it. Really done it. In the dying days of the Third Reich, what remained of the Nazis’ last gasp worked in concert with the Soviet State to create something so profound, so surreal. Something early explorers had searched for in their travels to the New World.

Eternal life.

The plants in the nursery – it all made sense. That’s what Marcus had worked on endlessly in his lab. It’s why she was left on the periphery and never allowed inside. Restoration of skin elasticity. Revving of the body’s metabolic state. Strengthening of bone and muscle groups. Marcus had held a miracle in his hands.

But what connected a doctor in America with the former Soviet and Nazi empires? And how old was Dr. Marcus, the man for whom her heart had once yearned?

Adrian’s research into Abbie Warner was only partially accurate. Instead of being the child of Eva Braun, was it really possible she was Eva Braun herself? If so, then who was Debrille? The memory of his face silhouetted by a fire in the enormous hearth sent a shiver of fear through her. Could he really be…?

The hard press of cold metal to the base of her skull stopped the raging thoughts. A gruff voice grated across frayed nerves.

“You be trespassing on my land.”

Samantha willed strength into her voice. “This is Dr. Smythe’s property. I have his permission to be here.”

A spit of tobacco splattered across pages she’d just read. “The land belongs to him who works it. That sissy city-boy ain’t set foot here in years.”

“Nevertheless, I have Dr. Smythe’s permission. Call him and ask.”

A boot scattered papers nearer the fireplace. “What’s all this about? Why you here?”

“Research,” Samantha grunted as the gun muzzle broke skin.

Fingers itched to grab the Glock from her waistband, but the sudden jerk at her pants relieved her of that protection. Panic threatened to settle in without the weapon nearby.

“Nice hardware you have, Miss Researcher.”

The muzzle against her skull was probably a double-barrel shotgun. Long barrel coupled with long arms left too much space to cover to sweep his feet. There was also the possibility she’d slip on one of the nearby manuscript stacks. A mangled brain wasn’t worth the risk. The worst the local farmer would do is make her pack up and leave the security of the house. She’d survived worse.

“If you don’t want to call Dr. Smythe that’s fine,” Samantha offered. “Let me pack up my stuff, and I’ll get out of your hair.”

“No can do.” Another splatter of tobacco landed closer. “You owe me a squatter’s fee first.”

So that’s what this was about – money? “How much for a couple of nights?”

“Get on your stomach and I’ll show you.
